Use plain text equivalents like “and” and “percent.”  ATS can parse signs like the dollar sign, especially when attached to a numerical value, but it may not be able to correctly read special characters such as ampersand, hash, slash, and %.

When labeling sections, use the traditional standard titles of professional summary, professional experience, skills, certification, and volunteer activities. ATS are optimized to recognize standard section headings and are not familiar with creative phrasing.
