Referral Cover Letter

Backend Engineer at Orion Cloud Systems

Software Engineering
Mid-Level

Dear Mr. Okonkwo,

I am writing to apply for the Backend Engineer position at Orion Cloud Systems. Your senior engineer, Priya Mehta, recommended I reach out after we discussed the role at a local meetup last month. Based on her description of the team's work on distributed caching infrastructure, I believe my experience is a strong fit.

I currently work as a backend engineer at Vantage Software, where I build and maintain Go microservices that handle 18 million API requests per day for our payments platform. Over the past year, I redesigned our caching layer using Redis Cluster, reducing p99 latency from 340ms to 85ms and eliminating a recurring cache stampede issue that had caused three production incidents in the previous quarter. I also introduced structured logging and distributed tracing across 22 services, which cut our mean time to resolution on production issues from 45 minutes to under 12.

Priya mentioned that Orion is migrating from a monolithic architecture to microservices, which is a transition I led at Vantage over the past 18 months. I understand the technical challenges involved, from service boundary decisions to data consistency across distributed systems, and I also understand the organizational challenges of getting teams aligned on a new architecture without slowing down feature delivery.

What interests me about Orion beyond the technical work is the engineering culture Priya described. Ownership-driven teams, meaningful code review, and a genuine investment in developer experience are the qualities I look for in my next role.

I would appreciate the chance to discuss how my distributed systems experience can contribute to Orion's infrastructure goals. Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
Chris Blake

Why this referral cover letter works

Names the referrer in the first sentence. Chris does not bury the referral in paragraph three. The hiring manager sees Priya's name immediately, which changes how the rest of the letter is read. A referral letter that does not lead with the referral is a wasted advantage.

Adds context to the referral. Chris explains how he knows Priya and what they discussed. This turns a name-drop into a credible professional connection, not just someone who forwarded a job link.

Uses the referrer's insights to demonstrate fit. By referencing what Priya told him about the team's caching work and the monolith migration, Chris shows he has insider knowledge of the team's priorities. This is information an external applicant would not have.

Balances the referral with independent qualifications. The second paragraph stands on its own with strong metrics. Chris does not rely solely on the referral to carry the letter. The connection opens the door, but the technical evidence walks through it.
