5th Grade Teacher at Maplewood Elementary School
Dear Dr. Castillo,
I am writing to apply for the 5th Grade Teacher position at Maplewood Elementary School. With five years of experience teaching upper elementary grades and a passion for project-based learning, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to a school community that values student-centered instruction.
At my current school, Lincoln Park Elementary, I teach 5th grade ELA and social studies to a diverse classroom of 28 students, including 6 English language learners and 4 students with IEPs. Over the past three years, my students have consistently outperformed the district average on state ELA assessments by 12-15 percentage points. I achieved this by implementing a structured literacy block that integrates close reading with collaborative discussion protocols, giving every student daily opportunities to practice academic discourse.
I also co-developed our grade level's interdisciplinary capstone project, which asks students to research a local community issue, interview stakeholders, and present policy recommendations to a panel of city council members. This project has been featured in our district's curriculum showcase two years running and is now being adopted by three other elementary schools.
What draws me to Maplewood is your commitment to inquiry-based learning and your school-wide emphasis on social-emotional development. I hold my ESL endorsement and have completed training in Responsive Classroom, both of which align with the inclusive, whole-child approach your school is known for.
I would love the chance to visit Maplewood and discuss how my experience can support your students and teaching team. Thank you for your consideration.
Warm regards,
Kim Devereux
